"You are smart." Arata said, although phrased in his usual monotone, it didn't really sound like a compliment. He stared into space for about 30 seconds before realising that they were separated from the other questers. In fact, he could barely identify the direction they came from. Frowning slightly, he murmured, "We can't get back..."
(omfg i can't stop laughing)

Rien, for whatever reason, did not interrupt Arata for that entire thirty seconds, spending part of it just staring at the creature and slowly spending the other part deciding whether Arata was being sarcastic or not. He glances towards Arata, standing a bit straight. "... what?" He glances back towards the monster. "... what..."
I hate Arata I want to slam-dunk him into a garbage bin he makes me scream

he'd be back where he belongs
"Oh well." Arata shrugged, before heading off in a random direction. "It is dark, so we should get to shelter." It looked as if it might start raining, all the more reason to take cover. He looked at Rien, waiting for approval.

Rien, not looking so pleased anymore, hurriedly opened his map and scanned it. "... This is... weird... we're... off-course. For the first time, this entire time." He stuffs it back into his jacket. "In short, I've got NOT A DAMN CLUE where we are, but, yeah, sure, let's go find shelter."

Arata nodded and continued to venture through the trees. He had actually had no idea where the group was going in the first place, and just tagged onto them because it looked like fun - but now he was confidently leading the way. "Don't worry! I know where I am going."

"Do you know this area?" Rien followed, glancing nervously over his shoulder now and then. He didn't know anything about Arata. In fact, he'd forgotten his name, and they'd barely talked before this, so that's pretty great.

(these two are so rubbish at life they honestly suit each other)
"Not at all," he said, sounding very pleased with himself. "But I'm certain there will be a cave ahead." Sure enough, after they walked for a little longer, said cave came into view. "There it is." He grabbed Rien and dragged him inside.

ship name idea: disastership
"If you've never been in this area how do you know-? ... what the fuck." Rien gestures a bit at the cave, stopping, but was forced to keep moving towards it. "OKAY but is the cave a really good idea? Like, honest to goodness a good idea, to go into this dark cave when it's almost night?"

"....But it will be fun. And a bonding experience." Arata smiled cluelessly. It conveniently started pouring at that exact moment. He shivered, wrapping his jacket around himself tighter. Having a look around the cave, he also discovered a number of sticks and wondered if they could kindle a fire.

Rien was going to say something else, but stops to look at the rain, and decides it was probably a good call they got inside at the time they did, so he held his tongue. He turns to look back at Arata. "Alright. But I'm staying up here and not going further into this cave or else something will try to kill us."

"That is fine with me." Arata agreed, fruitlessly scraping two sticks together. Unsurprisingly, no fire. It seemed they'd be sleeping on the cold cave floor tonight. Bored, he glanced curiously at Rien. "Are you all right? Are you still having pain?"

"My throat hurts like hell and I want to die," replies Rien simply. "Thanks for asking."

Arata immediately looked upset. "That is sad. I am sorry." He gave Rien an awkward pat on the shoulder.
(hey Rien at least it wasn't a hug this time)

Rien uncomfortably put his own hand on the place where Arata's had been, and was silent for a bit. "Have a headache, too. And I'm scared and I'm cold. I wish I could just go home. I at least want to sleep in an actual bed sometime." He pulls up his scarf a bit and glowers at the ground.
venting comes with a price and that price is uncomfortable physical contact i believe: last time rien slept in a bed: the inn, all the way before the demon friday tunnel, before the rest of the party got there

"...I am cold, too." Arata admitted, as if this would be any consolation. "And tired, but mainly cold." He gazed at the rain-battered trees that were visible from the cave mouth. "At least we suffer together."
