I was six. I don't remember it very well, but I remember dad's axe. I didn't see what he did to the man who had kidnapped me, but I did see the axe, the parts of it that weren't bloody reflecting the dim light of the hunting cabin like a beacon. He dropped it when he saw me so he'd have both his arms free to hold me. He hadn't let go when Luthor brought back the axe. He looked over it like he'd forgotten all about it, then smiled. "Thank you, Luthor." And for the first time that day, he set me down, and picked it up instead. "I want you two to learn how to use one of these," he told us. "Not this one, of course. Bit too big." "Not too big for me," said Luthor, and I nodded eagerly. "Alright, little man." He turned it in his grip and held it above both of us, and Luthor held his arms up, and dad dropped it. It would've landed on my lap if dad didn't catch it again, right above my legs, Luthor's little arms doing nothing to hold it. Luthor pouted as he sat beside me, and dad gently lowered it the rest of the way into our laps. "Not this one," he repeated, kneeling in front of us. "But I want you two to be able to protect yourselves." "You protect us," I said. "Yes." He pointed at me, but then he looked down at my leg, then back up, smile gone. "But I won't be able to forever. And even now sometimes. Which is why you two are gonna have to protect yourselves. And each other." He taught us how to use a weapon after that.
I was twelve. They killed my dad and then they strung him up so everyone could see Ambriel Killcrop was dead. We saw it too. They didn't do it for us to see, but they had to have known we would, right? They had to have known he had kids who'd see. They left his axe on the ground beneath him. Luthor tried to pull me back by my collar when I went to pick it up. We'd been standing there for a long time before I did that. The axe was too big for me back then and I had trouble even picking it up, but I did, and I turned around to look at Luthor. His eyes stayed on dad hanging above me a few moments more before tracking back to me with a little bit of a tremble in them. He didn't say anything, just taking deep breaths. "Will you help me bury him?" I asked. I wasn't tall enough to cut him down. Luthor looked back at dad. "Bury him?" He kept staring. "Just what do you think that'd do, Nott?" I didn't answer him. The axe, getting heavy, slipped in my hands. His eyes went to it. "Give me that," he said, and he walked over and he took it from me. It wasn't too big for him and he turned it over in his hands and looked down at me? "You wanna know what I'm gonna do?" I didn't nod, and he said, "I'm gonna kill every sorry motherfucker who did this." I don't know if Luthor actually killed anyone that night. I was burying dad.
I was fifteen. I think that day Luthor did kill someone. Whatever happened bothered Kali, and she sat beside me, and said, "Your brother knows how to use that axe, doesn't he?" I liked it when she came to talk to me and I nodded. "I do, too. Dad taught us." "Right. It was his, wasn't it?" I knew she had no choice but me, since Luthor wouldn't talk about this, but I liked it anyway. "Yeah, it was. Did something happen?" She looked away. "Uh, no, no." "Did you ever meet our dad?" "I saw him. Once." "He looks a lot like him." I don't know why I pushed her like that sometimes. The troubled look in her eye when she looked back at me was exactly what I'd been expecting, but it still made my gut twist. She had to take a moment before she said, "I don't think he does." I looked at her, thinking she was lying, until she said, "He just looks like Luthor to me." "What about me?" She smiled. "And you just look like Nott to me, silly." And she looked back towards Luthor, far enough away he hadn't heard our conversation, and she said, "I think that old axe might be too big for either of you."
I was sixteen. I don't think I thought Kali could lie and then she was telling us she was a bounty hunter, or she had been, but she'd given it up. I don't think Luthor even would've forgiven that much easy, and then she told us about how she helped hold the string when I had been twelve. I should've stopped him. I tried. At least I tried, but when I grabbed the handle of the axe at the same time he did, all it did was slow it down. Made it messier. Made her bleed out slower. I watched her die. Both of us, in silence, staring the same way we stared at dad. Finally, the axe getting heavy, it slipped in his hands. And I took it. His eyes went to me. He didn't move at all until I'd taken the first swing. He caught it by its shoulder, not quite stopping it from driving into his own. "Nott," he said to me, real gently, and I pulled the axe back. "Calm down." "How could you do that to her?" "It's okay, Nott, you can put it down." "No, it's not. You killed her. You loved her." "I thought I loved her. I was wrong. But I still love you," he said, and that's when I took the second swing. Again, he caught it, this time before it could reach his neck, and I braced for him to pull it from me, but he didn't, arms shaking with the effort to hold it at bay instead, and he only looked at me. I hated it. "How could you do that?" I repeated, and I pulled the axe again, and he didn't try to keep it. "You know I had to," he said like I'd understand. "You're a fucking monster." "You're my little sister." And I swung again. Again, his arms shook with the effort of just holding it back. But not far enough. He managed to push it out and blood started rushing from his neck down his shirt. I can't remember if I still wanted to or if I was just scared. I do remember that he still didn't try to hold on, still didn't try to take the axe from me, and I swung one more time and severed his head from his body. I buried him separately from Kali and Justice. I buried the axe with him. It had fit us both perfectly.

Evie voice what do you mean there's a difference between respect as in being looked up to and respect as in human decency. no I dont need to relax
also that way evie was like I Can Handle Anything They Give Me I Will Be The Chryseis's Pride and the second molly showed up that all broke into I Can't Let Them Do This To Another Child but also that original pride is still there
have no details to evies or yohais backstories but still want to post yohai would adopt evie (evie rejects this intensely yohai is now the weird uncle who only shows up now and then and still thinks of themself as a parent figure) and when they stand next to each other a little banner that says "cult survivors" in a cheery text manifests above them.
1. yohai and evie have a net zero chance of ever possibly meeting 2. it's net zero because it was negative until the thought "ghost yohai" blasted it to positives, and then the fact that yohai would have no reason to haunt anywhere near avernock brought it back to zero. 3. ghost yohai is like *SPONTANEOUSLY BURSTS INTO SCREAMING FLAMES* *as a joke haha lmfao you were so scared*
also this has no relevance but i think yohai's real name is ina or eena. cute names to be called by people you hate.
Yohai in the band au LOOKS like shed smash equipment on stage at the end of a song but I also think she'd be absolutrly incensed horrified by ellis mistreating a vintage guitar yohai voice, increasingly strained AM I THE ONLY ONE IN THIS BAND WHO CARES ABOUT THE SANCTITY OF MUSIC
blood and sugar concert injoke where yohai keeps stealing other members instruments for her songs but she can't do that with guitar because she tries and jackwell just stands there like i dont know how to play anything else.
modern yohai has long and incredibly one sided conversations with hotlines whenever she feels alone in the world. it does not help. also relevantly to feeling alone and insignificant yohai keeps wracking up star motifs but she fucking hates stargazing actually because how can she look at the sky without feeling... like that
let ghost yohai become like. a death knight or some shit. give them POWER. but also give them the chosen one is dead he's been dead for years you're too late it's over it's been over. connects yohais spirit to some shit like an engraved golden sheath the washed up in avernock and evie has enough record access to like. place their name or like their old name to the cult as well and by some fuckery evie is actively bringing yohai back. pov you wake up its the middle of the night you are paralyzed a tall figure stands in your room they are smoldering and smoking they pick up the sheath off your bedside they look down at you with this wide eyed glare and leave the room you smell smoke. the sheath is still gone in the morning. you go to artie.
... Technically Yohai got the blaze of glory that Magni didn't... (yohai voice) somehow I'm not sure that's something to celebrate
Ballroom Blitz - Sweet | And the girl in the corner said, "Boy, I wanna warn ya, it'll turn into a ballroom blitz" I Don't Wanna Know - The Weathers | If you wanna love me, I don't wanna know I'll Probably Never Be Somebody - Vlad Holiday? | To want you to hold me like I’m somebody
This Is My Life - Firewater | But you can cut them down with a rusty knife
Morirò da Re - Måneskin | I will die as a king

uh oh questionable angel and carver nsfw content time. game of never have i ever; topic is something that'd hurt; angel is like haha no eddie was too squeamish to ever do something like that. and then they think how carver never tried to do any of that stuff on them; and then they think how if carver had sprung something like that on them within the past year they probably would've called the cops; and then they neatly compartmentalize the fear that knowing they'd call the cops is the only reason carver never tried anything like that;

Ellis had a lifechanging fieldtrip with zuko except it was not with zuko it was with the doctor who treated her when she got so sick she could not move
- first time she got sick wasn't as bad. magni mightve let her in to the captains quarters to rest and have a bried heart 2 heart; this is what killed jackwell's mother and what will probably kill her too. if a battle doesn't get you. if a battle doesn't get me. - the next time it happens she doesn't get better. word gets around after she doesnt get up for a few days and has to be brought food or water. - and then she stops eating, and the crewmate on duty runs up and tells this to magni, and magni sits down, and reminds jackwell she needs to eat and she can't give up yet and shes not gonna die like this. and jack doesnt respond at all but she stares at magni and she has no expression but theres this sorrow and fear in her eyes and magni goes "Jack?" And she still doesn't answer and she doesnt look away and neither does magni and magni goes "Jack, if you can't speak, blink twice" and jack blinks twice and magni is scared and she goes "Jack, if you can't move, blink twice" and Jack blinks twice - she'd realized that moment. you blink awake in the morning light that drifts in and everything's fine until you try to move, just to turn over, and you can't. you just panic and then you stare at the hand resting in front of you like it's not even yours and, with all your effort, you twitch a finger. and that's it. jackwell closes her eyes, thinking to herself, this is how I die. - (make sure she gets some water in her, says magni. can you swallow, jack? And with some effort, jack swallows. good, says Magni, at least you won't starve to death, and this gets a breath of a sarcastic laugh from jackwell, and Magni repeats, good.) - magni talks to the crew. says jackwell's real sick. might die before we dock kinda sick. but what we could do is change course - dock somewhere smaller, sooner, pray that she survives that long. she says it's a big diversion for just the one man which is why she's leaving it up to a vote. before she can even finish there's one vote aye, an older man who's always found jackwell funnier than she is, and he's not the last, because jackwell's saved a lot of lives in battle and sure it'll take longer to get where they're going but they don't got a deadline and it sure won't kill anyone to dock a little sooner, so the helmsman changes course.
A massive ship lit by red lanterns rolls through the harbour in the dead of night. Looking upon the dark and creaking oak as the immense sails begin to come down, the dockmaster feels his blood run cold. A pirate ship is docking in the small town of Peat. The plank comes down, stretching over the dark and quiet waters that do their best to rock the ship. Creak. Creak. Thud. The plank hits. The dockmaster keeps his distance, watching as, by the light of a carried lantern, darkened figures catch the ends of ropes thrown overboard to them and begin to tie the ship. They keep casting glances in his direction, and indistinguishable conversation floats in between the creaking of the wood, but none approach him. There's movement at his side and he bites his tongue trying not to jump in alarm. The little girl who lives near the docks has run up, woken by the creaking, and stares in marvel at the pirate ship. When she finally notices the dockmaster staring down at her, she takes a few steps back as if to retreat. The dockmaster hears her little steps stop not far behind him, but has no time to chase him away. The captain is descending from the ship. The crewmates tying the boats off to the cleats look up at the sound of her footsteps and watch her descend. A broad-shouldered woman with a fierce black beard draped in a blood red coat steps onto the dock. Her eyes set on the dockmaster and she makes her way towards him. She wears no weapon at her hip, and though her crew watches, both from the dock and above, from the deck, she approaches alone. "Is there a doctor in this town?" The little girl, eyes wide, turns and runs off for the doctor. The doctor, coat pulled over his nightclothes, a little girl hanging by his side, meets the captain and the dockmaster halfway into town befor they can make it to him. "You're the doctor?" the captain asks, voice low. "I am," the doctor answers, expression laced with uncertainty. "My name is Magni Auldvoss. You might know me better as Magni the Merciless, Captain of the Blood and Sugar." The doctor feels the next breath he takes shake with fear and the captain raises a hand as if to settle him. It takes a moment for her, with the bravado gone from her tone, to tell him, "One of my crew is sick. We would all hate to see such a great swordsman to go down to illness." A brief pause. Nobody says anything; The captain fills it: "The Blood and Sugar is one of the richest ships on the coast. Any sort of reward, for you, for the town-..." "May I see her?" The captain blinks. "Yes, of course. Please." With a diplomatic gesture, she gestures to be followed, and the doctor abides. The dockmaster grabs the little girl by her collar to keep her in plce. The crew keeps a wide and silent berth as the captain and the doctor return to the ship. The grim eyes of the crew below deck do not leave the doctor as he enters the sleeping quarters. Unlike the captain, they still bear weapons - for where would they put them? It is more than unsettling. It is terrifying. But all that leaves when the doctor sees Jackwell. "What is it?" The doctor kneels to lay a hand against her burning forehead. "We don't know," the captain says. "That's why we're here." The doctor looks up, then around. Suddenly the crew's gaze is no longer unfriendly - it is worried. "What are the symptoms?" "Fatigue. Now paralysis. It's recurring, and apparently inherited. It's never been this bad before." "Paralysis," the doctor echoes, checking her pulse - racing. "Is she responsive?" In answer, Magni puts a hand onto her shoulder and gives a gentle jostle. "Jack?" "Jack?" "Jackwell," murmurs Magni, then gives another shake. "Jack, can you hear us?" Jackwell's eyes flutter, blearily half open and staring unseeing at the bed above her. Magni takes her face in a hand and turns to make eye contact. "Jack, we got a doctor here. Blink twice if you're with us." Jack stares into Magni's face a moment until her eyes focus, alert despite the exhaustion, and she blinks twice, firmly and deliberately. "Thank you." Magni pats her chest gently, affirmingly, and Jack relaxes, eyes drifting back away, a tired child. The doctor stands, eyes staying on the sick woman. "I've a spare bed for patients if you'll help bring her." Immediately, the captain points and two crewmates move towards the bed. Jackwell seems to sleep while they heft her up by shoulders and ankles and carry her into town. The doctor leads and the captain trails behind them. They set her down in a bed with clean linen sheets and the doctor goes to soak a towel in cool water - he stops, startled by the little girl trying to peer in through the door. "Carrie! Please, now's not the time." "Yohai," the captain says, "keep the girl occupied." "I'm not a babysitter," answers the crewmate. They hold a gaze with the captain before they push off the bed and slip outside, followed by the other crewmate, shutting the door behind them and leaving the captain alone in the room with the doctor. Magni watches a moment as the doctor lays the towel across Jackwell's forehead. "Name your price," says Magni, barely above a whisper in the quiet room. "We can pay half up front and the other half when we return to her so long as she hasn't been mistreated." "I'm a doctor, captain. You know we swear oaths. I wouldn't be abe to turn her away if I wanted to." "Give the money to the town, then. Make sure Jack isn't subject to their ill will." "Talk to the dockmaster. He'll be able to do his best." Magni nods, turns to leave, then stops and lingers. "Will you be able to do anything for her?" "... I will be able to do my best." There's a gentle understanding in his voice that's matches in Magni's eyes when she nods and takes her leave.
- the blood and sugar, a beautiful and massive ship lit by red lanters, arrives in the small seaside town in the dead of night. the town sleeps but the dockmaster is up to see it and a little girl wakes up to the sound of it creaking. Magni tells her crew to stay put, if she gets turned away because one of you disturbs the peace before she can even make it, Jack's life might be on your damn hands. And so it comes that the pirate king magni the merciless walks off the blood and sugar and onto the little docks of this little place and approaches the dockmaster and asks, "is there a doctor in this town?" - and the little girl has come out of her house and when she hears this she runs off to the doctor's house and knocks until he opens the door and he asks her what's wrong and she says there's pirates in town. The doctor has pulled a jacket over his nightclothes and meets magni and the docknaster before they make it to him. - Magni tells the doctor we've got a sick crewmate. We'd hate to see such a great swordsman go down to sickness. If you'll take care of her we're one of the richest ships on the sea. Anything you need, we can provide, and your reward will be handsome. The doctor asks to see her. - The crew is dead silent and staring and the doctor is ill at ease until he sees jackwell and forgets everything else for a face so obviously sick. Magni gives the information she can and the doctor asks for the crews help to bring jackwell off the ship and to a sickbed. Jack is barely in a state to blink yes or no anymore and she seems to sleep while two crewmates heft her up and carry her into town. - After chasing out the little girl, possibly by giving Yohai babysitting duty, Magni is the only other person in the room as the doctor begins the care he can. Magni says if it's money he wsnts she'll pay half up front and the other half when she comes back so long as jack hasn't been mistreated. The doctor asks if she knows we swear oaths. I don't need your money. I wouldn't be able to turn her away if I wanted to. And Magni says then give it to the village. Make sure they don't have ill will towards the pirate and, if possible, give her crew a day or two on land again. - When it's time for the ship to set sail, Magni lingers. "Do you think you can make her better?" With a sad understanding, the doctor answers, "I can help her." And with the same look in her smile, Magni leaves.
Jackwell comes to to the needle pricking her arm. She struggles to turn her head to look at the doctor. "I'm sorry," he says, glancing up with a little smile. "You're not afraid of needles, are you?" Her eyes focus on him, studying for a moment. And then she blinks twice for yes. The doctor's smile grows and he finishes collecting the blood sample. "Still an improvement. You didn't even flinch the last time I took a sample."
- Jackwell comes around with a sharp breath when the needle pricks her arm. She tries to look over while the doctor apologizes and asks her if shes afraid of needles. She blinks twice for yes. The doctor smiles, still apologetic, and finishes collecting the blood sample. As he does, he remarks she didn't even react for the last sample he took. - There is not much the doctor can really do. there is no medication that csn treat the cause, but at least he can ease the symptoms. slowly jackwell can take more food. slowly the physiotherapy lets her move again, though she doesn't speak, nor does she stand much yet. - The doctor is almost embarrassed to tell jackwell the little girl wants to see her. you see, she hangs around him, an apprentice in the making, and js dreadfully curious about the mystery pirate, but he will not let her in if jack is not okay with it, but Jack is okay with it. the little girl comes in and jack cannot tell her much about herself but the girl talks enough for the both of them about life in town. when the little girl finally thinks to ask for her name, she looks to the doctor, but Jack speaks up for the first time in weeks, just to tell the little girl her name is ellis. - Jack spends half a year in the town recovering. It's more than enough that by the time the ship comes back for her she's been helping out with dock work and earning a pay though she still stays under the doctor's care. Maybe the money did sway their opinion or maybe it was just her but the town, even when keeping their distance, did not worry for the little girl when she'd run up to greet her. - It is wrong to say this was the reason Jack decided to leave the blood and sugar. She would go back for some time in the end, and she had thought of it often before. But being so close to death, closer than she felt even in battle, but surviving in the company of these people - good people, the townsfolk, the doctor, the girl... It had its effect, and when Magni once again strode down the little dock, jackwell felt a pang of disappointment. - and still. Magni was carrying all of jackwell's swords with her when she went to meet her and the doctor, and Jack didn't say a word; just held out her hands, and magni grinned and passed the swords open for Jack to start sheathing to herself, ans Magni asks, lightheartedly, if she is fit for combat.
all this sick jack post and i still dont know what she has or what its symptoms actually are. also i think day probably has an eating disorder.

Tazi jolted awake. Ben kneed at her, mumbling, "Get the hell off me." Tazi paid no mind, taking deep breaths, and Ben cracked an eye open. "You alright?" "I dreamt I got stabbed and instead of blood there was dirt." "... Yeah okay." Ben closed her eyes again.

magni, on her knees in front of day, desperately lovestruck: you have no idea what you do to me day, sweaty, furiously blushing: shut up you're so melodramatic
Angel on the floor after the attempted murder adeline is talking about calling the police they just say "~Ladies~..... I can't fucking see"
Adequin: Are you married, Miss Belamy? Day: No, no. I was engaged for a time, but I'm afraid my husband-to-be died at sea. I suppose you would know how cruel the sea can be. Adequin: I do. It must be hard, living so close to it now. Day: No, not really. Truth be told I've always found the sea rather comforting... It kills without judgment.
