bark, squish, thump, whimper. brant is three years old and bolts upright to the sounds. sleepy - it is long past the middle of the night - he looks over to nicky's bed where she turns over, restless but asleep, and so quietly as he is prone to doing, he descends from his bed, cracks open his bedroom door, and tiptoes down the hall towards his dads bedroom. he reaches the doorway and he freezes, can't blink, can't look away, staring at their puppy's bleeding face, dimly aware of the blood pooling off his dads bed in his peripheral. like a deer in headlights, brant can't even move his eyes towards the other person in the room who fumbles around in the dark around the doberman pupp, whispering, "shit, shit, shit." angel is blinking furiously against the dim light. they silenced the dog but they can't find the knife anymore and they've already been here too long. carver, waiting in the car a block away, will be getting worried. or suspicious. angel's movements become frantic and their head runs into the nightstand, knocking the table lamp off. the table lamp lands on something with a metallic sound and angel stops to hurriedly check under the lamp. sure enough, the knife, still slick with blood, is directly beneath it. with a sigh of relief, they turn around and see brant. oh god. angel's life is so much easier before they realize what they have to do. if they wanted to keep this up, that is. not entirely sure what they're meaning to do, angel moves towards the little kid, and suddenly someone rushes brant out of the doorway. nicky holds brant tight against her in the dark corner of the hallway, one hand clamped over his mouth, his own tiny hand grabbing her wrist. she is seven years old. angel moves out into the hallway and they both hold their breaths. it is dead silent except the shifting of fabric as angel looks about. the hallway is dark but nicky knows they're out in the open. angel looks right at them. but, blinking, angel can't see them. trying to force the sickness rising in them, angel curses, "fuck this. fuck me." and hurries to leave the way they came. nicky and brant, barely breathing in the dark and empty corner, stare after them.

Angel: I hid the fact that I was going blind for years because I didn't want to be a failure Adeline: A failure in what? Serial killing? Angel: Priorities are priorities, okay?

- remember GM overlay - does is aspen wolf form cursed? - ildere book proximity, bump wild magic chance -Give em 36 gold and a key with a skull for a handle in a waterproof lockbox at the bottom of the well, maybe lodged in to look like a brick HOOK It's been quiet. After you turned down the church's gift, there, mercifully, has been no parties. Tymend's boyfriend Kjorn - not husband, he'd been asking to be married for years now but Tymend had always been pussyfooted about it - has taken over the inn and has been both friendly and generous with you, letting you stay in the rooms free of charge. You've been here more than a week - which means you've heard nothing from or of Lancaster for more than a week. Have you told anyone that Obdis, Tymend, and Fasrey are alive? You descend from your rooms in the inn one morning. Kjorn is either extremely somber, pouring himself a drink, or Has Some Fucking Questions for the party. Tymend, Obdis, and Fasrey were all found dead near Blackmouth. Apparently, their bodies are being taken care of and to be returned by the Undertaker, "the closest thing Blackmouth has to Moradinian priest." BLACKMOUTH You arrive in a storm. There's a tavern blah blah blah. *pouring rain* *the undertaker who had taken in the stoneborns muttering to themself* the bodies are gone. i knew something was wrong with them but now they're just gone. what am i supposed to do with that. (undertaker voice, strained) look I'm supposed to have three bodies here and now I don't so please either go collect the three that went missing for me or... well..... (counts the party) ... FAIRNETTLE ESTATE Undertaker can lead you to the place the bodies were found. A perception check reveals [gasp] a purple coat, pinned into a tree with Obdis's axe. Undertaker mentions that's the way to the Fairnettle Manor, which used to house a rich wizard.... do i have to come or.... Undertaker should either come with the party to heal or offer potions/scrolls DRIVEWAY - Scary gates, lots and lots of dead plants - Two statues ominously frame the path, wrapped in dead plants. 2 Awakened Trees (900xp) you swear to god the topiaries just turned to look at you, but they seemed rooted to the ground... COURTYARD 3 Stoneborn Ghouls (600xp, but imagine the cost) stand, staring at the door, in total silence. Obdis (leader, blacksmith), Tymend (innkeeper), and Fasrey (seamstress). No decay, but milky eyes. A patch of shriekers ordinary mushrooms surreptitiously line the fountain/area. Door is locked, barred from the inside. The alternate entrance is through the kitchen, force them to crawl through the mass of (LIVE) vines into the foyer. Stone walls blocking either side, but you could feasibly climb over either and to the well. FOYER -Empty book cases under the stairs, looted kitchen to the left, A wild Lancaster appears at the top of the stairway with a dramatic flourish! ... But then, he lowers his sword... He is happy to see you! He hopes you've finally come around and brought Ildere to help translate the book... right? :^) -> Honesty triggers Lancaster battle, maybe he runs you to the UPPER FLOOR enemies and fights with them? -> Can be incapacitated and offer to lead you to the COURTYARD or killed and revived via the book a la Stoneborn. -> Deception either succeeds and proceeds to the UPPER FLOOR enemies or fails. -> Failed deception to 1 Shambling Mound (1800xp) ("He's hidden in the tunnels down there, it keeps him safe from all the giant snakes and trespassers!") ("What do I see at the bottom of the well?" "Not much. A bunch of dead plants...") Manor definitely more shriekers to just be a Problem. mushoom wrapped in spider webs what crimes will he commit
- Phase Spiders (700 each), varied depending on party size and strength Boss Bust down the door, find the corpse, but before your very eyes... Ghost (1100xp) or Wraith (1800xp) or Wight (700xp) based entirely on how bad the partys doing LMAO, ghost top choice though --- lancaster bits and pieces "I ran here after finishing off the Stoneborns and straight into a looter pillaging the place. Anyway, after he tried to rob and kill me - didn't work, obviously - I found out he was a bit of a wizard looking for wizard books and when I showed him the book he seemed keen enough to help me translate, so he's been locked in a room upstairs for quite some days now translating. No he doesn't have food or water why haha" "oh no you don't understand :^) I'm not working for him, if he tries to leave with the book before it's translated I'm here to make sure he doesn't get out alive"

"Not surprised," Ellis mumbled, back still turned to him. "'S genetic. Probably what got my mom too." Lancaster, sitting on the ground beside her bunk, was quiet for a few moments. Quietly, he asked, "Will you tell me about them?" "Huh?" "Your parents. Your life before you were a pirate." Ellis finally turned away from the wall with a serious look that was her version of a smile. "... It's kind of embarrassing." "You know that only makes me want to hear it more." She did crack a smile then, but it was gone as soon as it came and she turned her head to face the upper bunk. "Wanted to be a great swordswoman since I was small. Parents supported me, then out of nowhere stopped my training and wanted to sell my sword. I was a shit thirteen year old so I took it and ran. That young a pirate." She was quiet for a moment, taking her breaths weak but slow, and Lancaster said nothing, knowing that wasn't it. Like an admission, she finally finished, "Came to visit some four years later and was told they'd both died. Homeless. Didn't wanna make me feel bad by tellin' me we were goin' broke." A laborious breath, then nothing else. Lancaster shifted to look at her. "Ellis..." "Hindsight's a bitch," she interrupted. "Never even got to be a great swordswoman." "I think you're a great swordswoman." Ellis did not look back at him. Not for a long time. Then, voice fragile and rasped: "Thank you."

not to get too deep back into lancasters crew but [arvo, holding back tears] being a twink and looking 20 years younger than her does NOT make me blitz's sugar baby I am NOT a sugar baby I WORK - modern au ellis would and probably has lived off hawaiian pizza until it physically made her sick. picky eater? - Think ellis has some degree of facial paralysis - dav has a moral guideline to never fuck anyone too rich so she could never be called a gold digger. Hard Work. "Well I've always been pretty, but not pretty enough for this," laughs Lancaster lightly, twirling the necklace between his fingers. "I still have to work." Ellis, after apologizing for cutting of Lancasters finger: I respect that you didn't scream Lancaster, genuinely flattered: thank you REVISITING THE CREW CAPTAIN ORION BLITZ; Former Orlumbor halfling nobility, left the city-state after falling in love with Cleo Blitz. Bought a ship to ~travel the world together~ but like as long as they could do it while making money right. Looks SO straight-laced, but hasn't really cared about rules since she left home, so has a habit of dealing with the unsavoury, often at Cleo's encouragement - refused to play any part in the war, but if you don't say you're a refugee or deserter, she has plausible deniability. Grizzled, proficient in intimidation. Tight collared shirt helps. Gives orders in halfling. Don't know it? Tough, learn. So fucking sweet with her spouses but everyone else gets allotted one show of kindness per business year.
CLEO BLITZ; Teenage runaway halfling who managed to woo stuffy rich kid Orion and now absolutely soaks up the doting. A free spirit traveller not from the Coast even before meeting Orion, only cares about the war as much as she does. So friendly and sweet but has never snitched or broken a promise, Arvo's lollipop provider. Cooks for the crew, the only one who gets off without doing any other work. If you have a request for the Captain you ask Cleo to ask for you.
ARVO BLITZ; Hired as helmsman, possibly wooed Orion entirely with good sense. Older than her but looks like her sugar baby twink with a lollipop addiction. Supervises the working crew, always up early to get things in order. A prep-ass pushover. An elf not from the Coast, but lived long enough in Baldur's Gate to be outspokenly against the war - if Orion accepted weirdos aboard for Cleo, she took the stowaways for his. Too much sympathy and not enough ability to say the right thing.
ELLIS JACKWELL; Lan's teacher, the one person he'll openly call a better swordarm than him. Left piracy to be a better person but took her swords. Barely spoke to anyone until Lancaster drew her out - seems like an antisocial stoner until you see her catch a glass knocked off the table. Deadpan confidence is an unstoppable force. Despite being less social than his other friends, Lan was closer with her and trusted her more than anyone else. Wound up in the Sword Coast after fleeing the High Forest or another Elf Location; Had retired from piracy by the time the war started, but very nearly joined from a place of either valiant goodwill or bloodlust - resolved after helping with stowaways and seeing something familiar in them. Died young from an inherited illness.
RI DAVIAU; Lan's mom, went by Dav because she named her kid after herself. Dockworker, eternal optimist, and fiercely self-made. Chaotic alignment. Too independent to be mad that one Russ Linfoot faked his death to get out of fatherhood - a bit of an unconventional person as a whole. A slut, but like, a respectable and hard-working slut. Dealt with people she doesn't like by making jokes but in a deliberately obstructive way. A human originally from a larger port city, but followed the water until she settled in Lan's hometown.
JULIUS (JULES); A gnome from Elysium or similar, allegedly a real mess when Tally brought him to Orion, but now returned to form as a gorgeous asshole. Not spoken of how he got from Elysium to the Coast. Glitter eyeshadow fails to cover his emotional problems. Hates taking orders a lot for someone who works on a ship. Interests include one-upping people, espionage, gossip, and being petty. A slut, but not respectable or hard-working.
TALLIA MARK (TALLY); Anything wild on board can be traced back to her, Jules, and Lan somehow. She has Ideas. Quiet but mercifully so because everything she says is terrible. Nicknamey, called Lancaster Cassie. Talents include being stylishly grimy, climbing fucking anything, and handling eels with her bare hands. Despite how close she and Jules are, doesn't remember how they met, nor where she's from, and with an elf's lifespan, "not from the coast" hasn't narrowed it down. She doesn't really care.
Mmm it's inevitable I'm going to redraw Lan's crew. when I do. Consider giving lans weapons to their corresponding namesake. more noticeable in jules and tally but making ellis dual wield mayb oohh Can't put the art side by side as a redraw comparison bc the originals were low effort mspaints vs nice shiny new ones 😔 Leaving the room then walking back in to announce "ellis in a big hoodie, bike shorts, and a full sword belt. ... thank you" n walking back out avain I think Ellis for real cried when Lancaster asked to take her name and thats why he went through with it lmfao Currently oscillating madly btw thoughts like "ugh i feel shitty I want to shut myself off from everyone" and "heehee lancaster can sleep with his feet outside the blankets no fear"

REFUSING to discard everything because you have the fucking fantastic setpiece of the secret govt base overrun with parasites, a location we have prior stakes with full of people we have prior stakes with and a party with established investments. If I took over it wouldn't even have to be set in the world at all - IBIS would stay, but any other locations just become nameless places of the past because the focus is on the hell we're in right now. First I'd go the basic dungeon crawler in order to actually take out the main bad - fight the companions we've befriended(!!), the first fight being dragon argent before we can even get inside the facility (and god its so much worse in there) and the last fight being ossie guarding the heart. (forces them 2 kill ossie (or to get very creative) because she's the last stand and even when you do enough nonlethal damage to down her, her body's still alive, so the heart makes her stand back up) from there, where any other campaign might've ended, we deal with the fallout. The heart is dead but the oxblood in the infected is too and maybe every infected person - everyone everyone at the base - are silent, still, stopped. We're alone in the overrun base looking for a solution while the few things that still move - and god they shouldn't still be moving - come after us. There's a moral stake here, but possibly also a personal one, maybe we're trapped here, maybe it all needs to stay confidential. And then there's Az, of course, but he wasn't entirely corrupted when we got there, but I'm sure he had to fight against it during the first arc, and he would probably be the key to the situation now. And then comes the cleanup - the few people who have been allowed to stay at the facility haven't been able to remove the parasite and it has started to rot. What happens when something extraplanar and anomalous rots? Can't wait to find out but I hope there's psychological horror involved. And so on and so forth. There's no obvious buildup or culmination here but there's so much to work with I couldn't resistttt. All this with the personal stakes in there too. Now that maggot knows her escape route isn't compromised she's in a good mood only because she's deciding if it's even worth it to stay, Az is dealing with the death of dozens added to his list on top of possibly still being possessed and maybe the only person who knows it's still alive, and maybe Rass knows THAT at a certain point, Maggot in 'finale' arc, surrounded by parasitic creep literally invading her living space, brain going haywire, just shot someone she had trusted until they were infected, forced to reuse her skills from her early military days, literally trembling: I'm doing fucking fine fuck off piss off dont touch me TAKE EM BACK TO SUNDOWN ! ! ! 500 words and counting of sequel concepting and I can't even show it off 😔 64.media.tumblr.com/c138d3918b5b96504687750138ce0dc2/tumblr_nd8ue7wKBm1qd3hflo1_1280.jpg"*scribbling furiously in a journal* how fucked up would it be to take the party to a town thats like eerily similar to an early campaign town where it went disastrously"
