A stray, rusted pickup truck that had blatantly been picked clean of spare parts and was left to corrode loomed on the horizon, just right of a desolate town that seemed to have been abandoned for decades.
That was not at all what Cairo had expected to see. Then again, what did he expect? A war-torn city filled with political propaganda? An ethereal garden in the sky? Surely he'd wanted to end up somewhere bigger and brighter, where he wouldn't feel so empty and alone.
But here he was. At least he knew he could survive a voyage through the dimensional rift. He needed to find his friends.

"We're goners," muttered Rajam, who wore a look of pure dejection.
"Probably," said Lotus casually, "but we might as well do something about it. There's no use in sitting here, waiting around until we starve to death. Besides, the others should be around here somewhere. If they made it. C'mon, let's go." She paused, taking note of her surroundings: barren walls, dusty furniture, and boarded up windows. And a door. She checked to see if it was unlocked, then dramatically flung it open and walked outside into the harsh light of the afternoon sun. She squinted as she looked around, trying to make sense of where they were. The signs on the nearby buildings were faded into obscurity. While some bore faintly recognizable words, others didn't seem to belong to any language at all. An eerie silence encompassed the town; there wasn't a single trace of life or movement.
They were alone. For now, at least.

While the sudden change was downright nauseating, and the horror movie surroundings were a bit off-putting, Etu wasn't all too shocked to find himself in a church. It was rundown, with some pews broken completely in half and the stained glass windows no longer stained, and it probably was not for any God that anyone cared about. It still helped Etu steady himself. He made straight for the open doors, heavy wooden things that were hanging from their hinges.
Fletcher stood against a wall, kind of scared to do anything else. She was invisible, not even a shadow cast by the cobblestones at her feet. A rickety fire escape hung over her head; when it started to make her nervous, she stepped out into the sunlight, maintaining her visual silence. She tried to keep her steps as quietly as possible as she made her way down the street.
Meanwhile, Noelle was already running. Her boots pounded against the ground, throwing pebbles behind her. Her jacket was on kind of like a cape and it was billowing out behind her. She disrupted the peace but didn't give a damn. "This was a great idea," she hissed between her teeth. "Who the hell thought this was a good idea?" The moment she'd found herself at the edge of a city instead of her usual surroundings, she'd lost sight of her fire pit - It HAD to be somewhere in the streets, right? It HAD to be.

Lotus tensed, alerted by the sudden sound of someone bursting into a sprint. A blurred figure whizzed past her. Lotus felt her heart rise as focused on the running image. She could recognize that hair anywhere. "Noelle!" she called out as she charged after her, eager to catch up.
~
"H-Hey, wait for me!" Rajam cried, taking off after the two. He slung his bookbag over his shoulder and shielded his eyes from the smoldering glare of the sun.

Soon enough, Cairo arrived at the edge of the town. He looked around for any signs of danger, and when he didn't find that, he looked around for any signs of life. That, he found. It materialized in the form of a dark-skinned boy emerging from a distant church. If I'm not mistaken, he's either Rajam or Etu, Cairo figured as he walked towards the boy. And if I am, I'll pray that he isn't dangerous. There was only one way to find out.

The sudden outcry at least grabbed Noelle's attention - she stumbled as she spun around, trying desperately to keep up the place. Wild eyes focused on Lotus and Rajam. Her eyebrows lowered - it was good that she wasn't alone but damnit, this wasn't what she was looking for. "Not now!" she shouted back, spinning so she was running straight again.
Etu took a deep breath. Even the air smelled musty. He faced mostly away from Cairo, unaware of the boy's presence. He whistled as he twirled his wrist and thrust his hand into the air. A rod of bright, white light shot up into the sky. Pleased with himself, he turned around and almost jumped at the presence of someone else. He squinted. He recognized Cairo easily and straightened up, waving him over.
The light interrupted the otherwise steady rays of afternoon sun. Noelle stumbled again, trying to get a good look at it, but didn't slow down her sprint, quickly drawing her eyes back to the street. Fletcher stopped walking entirely. It wasn't a hard choice to alter her direction. After all, even if that light was bad news, she'd be able to escape easily.

"What, why not?" Lotus shouted as she forced her legs to move faster. The sudden eruption of light was nearly blinding, but it wasn't enough to stop her entirely.
Rajam skidded to a halt, but tripped on a rock. Before he could even register his folly, he sprang forward onto the ground. He coughed as dust clouded around him, rendering him blind to his surroundings. "Lotus," he choked, "stop running."
~
After his eyes adjusted to the change in lighting, Cairo registered the boy as Etu, one of his acquaintances from before everything went to hell. "Found any signs of the others yet?" Cairo asked.

"If you're gonna keep running at least run somewhere useful," panted Noelle. "A bonfire - MY fire - I need to find it." She finally slowed her pace at an intersection so she could give an intense look in every direction. When she couldn't spot the familiar glow, she gritted her teeth and hissed. She met Lotus's eyes briefly then chose a direction and returned to her sprint.
Etu shook his head. "I only just got out here. I don't think even ghosts live in that place." He nodded at the church, smiling, then nodded up at the beacon he held. "But if this doesn't get their attention, I don't know what will. Am I the first you've run into?"
